Memphis is a city on the Mississippi River in southwest Tennessee, famous for the influential strains of blues, soul and rock 'n' roll that originated there. Elvis Presley, B.B. King and Johnny Cash recorded albums at the legendary Sun Studio, and Presley’s Graceland mansion is a popular attraction.
Memphis is also known for its rich history, especially its connection with slavery and the Civil Rights movement. Highlights of the city's involvement in African American history include the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum and the National Civil Rights Museum, which is housed in the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.
Graceland, the former estate of music legend Elvis Presley, has become the ultimate pilgrimage for fans of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. Graceland welcomes over 500,000 visitors each year, is one of the five most-visited home tours in the United States, and is the most famous home in America after The White House.
In 1991, Graceland was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2006, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Elvis purchased the 14-acre property in 1957, and now tourists have the unique opportunity to walk in Elvis’ footsteps like never before, in their own personal tour space spread out from other guests. Visitors may tour his home, admire memorabilia, and visit his tomb, which sits in the Meditation Garden.
